One student, who attended a session providing ways to make grammar “fun”, remarked: “I liked how the presenter kept reiterating that we need to stop doing grammar drills and boring our students. Another comment that was repeated by many was how well-informed they felt at many of the sessions, as they were able to relate to many of the ideas presented as a result of what they have learned in their core methods class. While they noted several valuable sessions that they attended, they were especially thrilled with the quantity of materials they were able to collect for their future classrooms. In the class discussion following the convention, students expressed a general excitement about the experience. Also present were many alumni of our program, again, reflecting the strong professionalism of ISU’s foreign language teacher ed program. Our presence was so strong that several exhibitors and session presenters commented on how impressed they were that so many ISU students were in attendance.

Out of 18 students in the methods class, some 14 attended, many of them slumbering at the homes of classmates who live in the Chicago area. The presence of ISU foreign language teacher candidates at the ACTFL convention in Chicago was particularly notable.

I will definitely adopt and adapt some of their techniques to make planning easy and fun.” Other sessions that were frequently commented upon by students were one offered by Dan Stoyak, which focused on ways to get students to communicate in the target language, and another, offered by John LeCuyer, which provided ideas for useful games in the foreign language classroom. I have heard that the first couple years of teaching require a lot of planning and time. This is what I aim for in my own classroom, since my own experiences were not exactly super-enjoyable and valuable.” Another student, attending a session for new teachers, commented, “I really enjoyed this session and think the presenters had a lot to offer. Commenting on one of the sessions, offered by veteran Spanish teacher Kathy Stoyak, one student remarked, “I think with a classroom like the one Stoyak seems to have (one that looks like someone “vomited Spanish” as someone once told her) that students will be willing to learn, and excited to as well. Many of them attended sessions designed specifically for new teachers and learned some “tricks of the trade” regarding planning and classroom management. I can’t wait to get out into my profession and try all the wonderful ideas that Susan Gross introduced.” Most of the methods students attended the ICTFL conference and arrived to class the following Monday bubbling with excitement. Virginia Paxson, one of the students who attended, commented in her write-up of the event, “After taking part in a conference like this, I am excited and know I am on the right job path. Only two students attended the AATSP sponsored workshop, but both were very impressed with what they learned.

In order to encourage the participation of our future foreign language teachers in these opportunities, they were offered the possibility of attending a specified number of sessions at these events and reporting back on them in lieu of the normally required research paper for FOR 319, the core foreign language methods class. And November 19-21, the ACTFL Convention took place in Chicago. On September 25th The downstate chapter of AATSP sponsored a full-day workshop on reading conducted by Susan Gross and titled “The Power of Reading in Foreign Language Classes.” During the weekend of October 22-23, the annual ICTFL Conference was held at The Chateau in Bloomington.
